A Decade of the Purest Light
LUXX Lichttechnik celebrates its 10-year company anniversary
“We look for light, we make light” – That’s the motto of the LUXX Lichttechnik GmbH company based in Anröchte, which is celebrating its 10-year anniversary this year. LUXX became known as a specialist for cold cathode fluorescent lamps. Cold cathode fluorescent lamps, also called CCFLs, are miniaturized fluorescent lamps. With diameters of 1.8 up to 4.1 mm, the lamps are hardly thicker than a match. In terms of brilliance, they are just as bright as their “big brothers”, the fluorescent lamps.
It all began in the year 1995. During a business trip, business manager Andreas Weyer discovered more or less accidentally the delicate cold cathode fluorescent lamps. At that time, they were utilized almost exclusively for the background illumination of LCD monitors and notebooks. Weyer was enthusiastic about the brilliance and energy efficiency of the miniature fluorescent lamps. Why should you hide the elegant, linear light in a monitor, when it could also be used in the lamp industry? In 1998, he therefore founded the LUXX Lichttechnik GmbH company. The first in-house product developments began in 2001 in the field of technical lamps; the alluxx 1, a pure cold cathode fluorescent lamp in a brushed aluminum profile was born. Then the deluxx 1 followed in 2002, in an acrylic tube with two angular mounting fixtures.
Today, 10 years later, the deluxx product line includes 13 different models. The development of the individual lamps reflects the customer demand to utilize the cold cathode fluorescent lamp technology more and more in end user products. For example, in some models, the inverter, which is required to operate the lamps, is directly integrated. Other models even have an integrated micro power supply and are ready to connect to 110 V-230 V AC. The design of these lamps provoked great interest e.g. in the furniture industry. After all, such a compact lamp offered completely new possibilities for accent illumination. Later the coluxx, an RGB model based on cold cathode fluorescent lamp technology, and, as the latest development, the ultra thin paluxx flat lights were introduced.
Today, the LUXX Lichttechnik GmbH is considered to be a niche specialist in the illumination industry. The cold cathode fluorescent lamp, which many viewed as dead, is becoming increasingly popular. One of the reasons for this is certainly its energy efficiency. Another reason is, however, design-oriented. The elegant, very pure linear light of the CCFL cannot be generated by using today’s technology of LEDs or other illumination sources.
Nevertheless, LUXX continues also to focus on the latest customer needs for LED-based products. In addition to further developing its cold cathode fluorescent lamps, LUXX developed almost 20 new LED-based lamps this year, which have been added to the product line. That LEDs and cold cathode fluorescent lamps do not mutually exclude one another, but rather supplement each other under optimal conditions, is clear, when you take a look at the LUXX product development and philosophy.
“If you look at it from a physical point of view, everything we do is geared towards releasing a specific number of photons at a specific place and time in an energy-efficient and aesthetically pleasing way. We look for light. We make light.”
